As I spend time with this painting in retrospect, the question that keeps arising for me:

Are instincts really that abstracted from the landscape, that they can float on their own?

This headless serpent knows no forward and back. It’s twisting around itself, with no real suggestion of what’s heads and what’s tails. It seems to be more than a worm, but even a worm would have a top and a bottom.
